STANLEY, N.C. (Sunday, June 29))–Rain and dangerous lightning curtailed last night’s scheduled auto racing program at East Lincoln Speedway.
"About 6 p.m. the storm arrived," said track manager James Honeycutt. "Lightning struck a electrical transformer in the pit area which serves the backstretch lights so even without the rain we would have been out of business for the night."
Driver Adam Vandiver was standing near a metal fence at the Pit Shack when the strike hit and was shaken by the jolt but not injured.
"It turned me around and almost made me lose my balance but I’m fine now," said Vandiver following his experience with Mother Nature..
Racing will return to the 3/8-mile clay oval next Saturday (July 5) with competition for seven divisions along with the added attractions of lawn mower races and kid’s bicycle racing. The first event is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The program will include the TJ’s Motorsports Warehouse Grand American Stock Car Clash that will award the winner $500. The Mid-Season Championships are currently on hold . Additional information on the adjustments to the 2008 schedule will be announced later in the week.
